Receiving alerts on components w/ monitoring status disabled

I'm baffled - I just turned on alerting for components being down within an application, and I was flooded with components that were down, but their monitoring status on the nodes are disabled.  Not sure what I am doing wrong here.

I created a template with 5 component monitors, and then applied that template to a bunch of servers, and on individual servers I went in and disabled some of those component monitors on servers that those components do not need to be checked.  When I turned on alarming for components down, I got alarms for components which were technically down, but were selected on that server as monitoring disabled.
